Math for Aviation

The Math for Aviation resource is designed to equip aspiring pilots with essential mathematical skills required in the cockpit. The development of this book was prompted by flight instructors who observed that many students struggled with basic arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, hindering their performance during flight operations. It includes an e-textbook, algorithmic assessments powered by a test bank with over 300 unique questions, solution manuals, PowerPoint presentations, and real-time performance dashboards to view individual or class performance.

The Math for Aviation resource is authored by Kevin Pruden of Fanshawe College. It uses some performance charts taken from the Flight Manual of Diamond DA20-C1 aircraft. To request access to the demo course, click here.

Math for Aviation: Strengthening Mathematical Skills for Pilots is a textbook designed to equip aspiring pilots with essential mathematical skills required in the cockpit. The development of this book was prompted by flight instructors who observed that many students struggled with basic arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, hindering their performance during flight operations.

A unique aspect of this textbook is that students are excepted to complete exercises without the aid of a calculator. This approach instills greater self-assurance in performing fundamental mathematical operations mentally or with traditional pen-and-paper methods. It reinforces the reliance on tried-and-true techniques, which remain steadfast even in today's technology-driven world.

The book utilizes a structured, step-by-step approach to provide clear insights into the problem-solving process.  As familiarity with these techniques grows, students will develop the ability to streamline procedures, resulting in time-saving and heightened efficiency in finding the solution.

While some performance charts and aviation topics are taken from the Flight Manual of the Diamond DA20-C1, it is essential to note that the underlying mathematical processes remain consistent across various aircraft types. The principles taught in this book will be universally applicable, regardless of the aircraft model.

Math for Aviation seeks to empower pilots with the fundamental mathematical abilities they need for safe and efficient flight operations. Emphasizing mental math and practical techniques, this book prepares pilots to confidently tackle challenges in the cockpit and beyond.
